PhD position – Modelling and Simulation of Superconducting Accelerator Components

initially limited yor 3 years.

Your tasks:

Charged particles are accelerator along high electric fields at the axis of superconducting cavities and guns. Power couplers, higher-order-mode couplers, diagnostic tools and misalignment may cause transversal kicks to the particle beam. At the Institute for Accelator Science and Electromagnetic Fields, such kicks are predicted by highly accurate electromagnetic field simulations, mostly on parallel computer systems. Despite being relevant, the transversal electric and magnetic field components are much smaller than the accelerator axial electric field component, which causes a particular challenge to modelling and simulating them. In this PhD project, you study, design, implement and apply improved field simulation techniques for calculating transversal kicks in superconducting cavities and guns. You will collaborate with physicist, electrical engineers and mathematicians on the topic of electromagnetic field simulation and numerical linear algebra. You work together with physicists and engineers at Deutsches Elektronensynchrotron DESY on the topic of accelerator physics. Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The Technische Universität Darmstadt provides the environment and support for publishing and presenting original research results at leading international conferences and in scientific journals.

Your profile:

  • You hold a M.Sc. degree with excellent marks in electrical engineering or physics.
  • You have a profound understanding of electromagnetic field theory.
  • You are interested in accelerator physics and technology and numerical simulation.
  • You have a good knowledge of German and/or English.
  • You intend to obtain a doctoral degree.
