Through the CREATOR SFB collaboration (Creator Seminar), Anna Takacs (Budapest University of Technology and Economics) was invited to present her work on physical modeling of saturated common mode chokes at TU Darmstadt's TEMF Institute.
Anna and the team tackled a well-known challenge: how CMCs behave when their magnetic cores saturate, either from DC bias or external fields. Instead of the usual RLC circuit approach, they built a model grounded in the actual physics of the superparamagnetic core material using Debye susceptibility. Key results: The model captures CMC behavior across the full saturation range, validates that standard DC bias-tee characterization is solid for practical design work, and even predicts the somewhat counterintuitive narrow-band filter effect at extreme saturation.
